Quercetin Benefits: Uses, Dosage and Safety

Avatar de David García David García 2 min de lectura

Quercetin is a flavonoid known for its antioxidant and “natural antihistamine” reputation. Learn what it is, what it is used for, how to take it, and the precautions to bear in mind.

What is quercetin?

Quercetin is a flavonoid (a plant pigment) found in foods such as onions, apples, berries, broccoli, capers and green tea. It is taken as a supplement for its antioxidant properties.

What is quercetin used for?

  • Antioxidant support: it helps protect cells from oxidative stress.
  • Anti-inflammatory action.
  • Natural antihistamine: it may stabilise histamine release, so it is used to support people with allergies and congestion.

How to take quercetin and dosage

Typical doses range from 250 to 1,000 mg per day. Because its absorption is limited, it is often combined with vitamin C or bromelain to improve uptake. To support general wellbeing, you can also explore turmeric with black pepper.

Side effects and contraindications

It is generally safe; at high doses it may cause headache or digestive discomfort. Caution is advised during pregnancy, breastfeeding and for people taking certain medicines (it may interfere with some drugs). Consult a healthcare professional before supplementing.
