Turmeric and Black Pepper Benefits: How to Take Them

Avatar de David García David García 2 min de lectura

The combination of turmeric and black pepper (often with ginger) has become popular as a natural anti-inflammatory. Learn why they are taken together, their benefits, and how to take them.

Why turmeric with black pepper?

Turmeric’s active compound is curcumin, a powerful antioxidant, but it is poorly absorbed on its own. This is where black pepper’s piperine comes in: it can markedly increase curcumin bioavailability (studies cite up to 2,000%). That is why the two are almost always combined.

Benefits of turmeric, ginger and black pepper

  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action thanks to curcumin.
  • Improved digestion and support for nausea, provided by ginger (gingerols).
  • Greater curcumin absorption thanks to piperine.

How to take it and dosage

Supplements aim to provide curcumin with a small amount of piperine (around 1% of the curcumin dose). At home, make an infusion with half a teaspoon of turmeric, freshly grated ginger and a pinch of black pepper; take it with some fat to support absorption. For digestive wellbeing, also see probiotics for diarrhoea.

Contraindications and side effects

It is generally well tolerated, but caution is advised with gallstones, anticoagulant treatment, pregnancy and breastfeeding. High doses may cause digestive discomfort. Consult a healthcare professional if you take medication. As a natural antioxidant, you may also be interested in quercetin.
