Vitamin D3 is one of the vitamins most commonly deficient in the population. Here is what it is, what it does, and how to take it.
What is vitamin D3?
It is the form of vitamin D (cholecalciferol) that the body produces through sun exposure and can also obtain from food or a supplement; it is more effective than plant-derived D2.
What is it used for?
- Bones: it supports calcium absorption.
- Immune system: it supports natural defences.
- Muscles: it contributes to normal muscle function.
How to take it and dosage
Typical maintenance doses range from 800 to 2,000 IU per day; for diagnosed deficiencies, a doctor may prescribe higher doses for a limited period. Take it with a meal containing fat.
Contraindications and side effects
Long-term excess can raise blood calcium levels (hypercalcaemia). Use caution with kidney disease and if you take medication that affects calcium. Consult a healthcare professional and, ideally, check your levels before taking high doses.
