Avatar de David García David García 2 min de lectura

Cordyceps is an adaptogenic mushroom valued by athletes and people seeking more energy. This guide covers its properties, evidence-based uses, how to take it, and contraindications.

What is cordyceps?

Cordyceps is a medicinal mushroom used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. The most common supplement species are Cordyceps sinensis and especially Cordyceps militaris, which is cultivated and concentrates actives such as cordycepin and beta-glucans. It is classed as an adaptogen because it helps the body cope with physical stress.

Cordyceps benefits and properties

  • Energy and physical performance: its most studied use. It may improve oxygen use and ATP production; one study reported an approximately 7% improvement in VO2 max after three weeks.
  • Immune-system support thanks to its beta-glucan content.
  • Antioxidant action, which helps combat oxidative stress.
  • Vitality and recovery, which is why it is associated with endurance and reduced fatigue.

Much of the evidence comes from small studies: cordyceps is a support, not a substitute for good nutrition or training.

How to take cordyceps and dosage

Trials have used 1,000 to 3,000 mg per day, split into several doses with meals. Start at the lower dose and adjust gradually. Like other adaptogenic mushrooms, it works best with consistent use over several weeks. For other mushrooms, read our guide to reishi benefits and properties.

Contraindications and side effects

It is usually well tolerated but may initially cause mild digestive discomfort (nausea or diarrhoea). People with autoimmune conditions, those taking anticoagulants or immunosuppressants, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid it or seek advice first. If in doubt, always consult a healthcare professional. For stress support, you may be interested in ashwagandha dosage and how to take it.
