Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a medicinal mushroom known as the “mushroom of immortality”. We cover its properties, evidence-based benefits, how to take it, and side effects.
What is reishi?
Reishi, or lingzhi, is a mushroom used for centuries in traditional Asian medicine. It is rich in two compound families: beta-glucans (polysaccharides with immunomodulatory action) and triterpenes, or ganoderic acids, responsible for its bitter taste and antioxidant and liver-protective effects.
Reishi benefits and properties
- Immune-system support: its best-documented effect; beta-glucans help modulate natural defences.
- Adaptogenic support: it helps the body cope with stress and fatigue.
- Antioxidant and liver-protective action associated with triterpenes.
- Its role in sleep, cholesterol and blood pressure is also being studied.
Research is promising, but many studies are small or in specific clinical settings, so reishi is best viewed as a supplement within a healthy lifestyle.
How to take reishi and dosage
It is usually taken as a beta-glucan-standardised extract. Studies have used around 1,500–1,800 mg of extract per day, although this varies with product concentration; always follow the manufacturer’s directions. As an adaptogen, its effects are best appreciated with consistent use. For energy-focused mushrooms, see cordyceps benefits and properties.
Contraindications and side effects
It is usually safe, although it may cause digestive discomfort or dry mouth; isolated liver effects have been reported with high doses or poor-quality products. Avoid it or seek advice first during pregnancy, breastfeeding, anticoagulant or immunosuppressant treatment, and before surgery. Consult a healthcare professional if you take medication.
