Avatar de David García David García 1 min de lectura

Maca is an Andean root increasingly used in energy and hormonal-wellbeing supplements. Learn what it is and how to take it.

What is maca?

It is a root (Lepidium meyenii) that grows at high altitude in the Peruvian Andes, traditionally eaten as food and now used as a powder or capsule supplement.

What is it used for?

  • Energy and vitality: its most popular use.
  • Libido and hormonal wellbeing: for both men and women, including during menopause.
  • General mood support.

How to take it and dosage

Typical doses range from 1,500 to 3,000 mg per day of maca powder or extract, taken in the morning on its own or added to smoothies.

Contraindications and side effects

Use caution with thyroid problems (it contains glucosinolates) and in people with hormone-dependent tumours because of its potential hormonal effects. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to insufficient research. Consult a healthcare professional if you have questions.
