Ashwagandha Benefits: Uses, Effects and Dosage

Avatar de David García David García 2 min de lectura

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the most widely studied and used adaptogenic herbs in food supplements. Here is what it is used for and how to take it.

What is ashwagandha?

It is a shrub used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Its root is used in supplements for its withanolide content, the compounds associated with its adaptogenic effects.

What is it used for?

  • Stress and anxiety: its most studied use; it may help reduce cortisol.
  • Sleep: it supports relaxation and deeper rest.
  • Energy and physical performance: its role in fatigue and strength is being studied.
  • Cognition: it may support concentration during periods of stress.

How to take it and dosage

The most common doses of standardised extract (KSM-66 or Sensoril) range from 300 to 600 mg per day, split into one or two doses with meals. Effects are usually noticed after 2–4 weeks of consistent use.

Contraindications and side effects

It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use caution with autoimmune conditions (it may stimulate the immune system), thyroid problems (it may raise thyroid hormones), and before surgery. It may enhance the effects of sedatives and thyroid or blood-sugar medication. Consult a healthcare professional if you take medication.
