Avatar de David García David García 2 min de lectura

Glycine is an amino acid with interesting properties for rest and overall health. We look at its properties, uses, how to take it, and its precautions.

What is glycine?

Glycine is the smallest amino acid and one of the most abundant in the body. It acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter (helping calm nervous activity) and is also the most abundant amino acid in collagen, making up almost one third of it. The body also uses it to make glutathione, a powerful antioxidant.

Glycine properties and benefits

  • Better sleep: it supports deeper rest. In studies, 3 g before bed improved sleep quality and reduced daytime sleepiness.
  • Relaxation: through its role as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, it helps lower body temperature and promote sleep onset.
  • Skin and joint health: as a component of collagen.
  • Antioxidant function, through its role in glutathione synthesis.

How to take glycine and dosage

For rest, the studied dose is 3 g dissolved in water around 30–60 minutes before bedtime. Higher amounts, often with collagen, are used for joint or skin support. It has a mildly sweet taste, making it easy to take. If better sleep is your goal, you may also be interested in tryptophan and its uses.

Contraindications and side effects

Glycine is very well tolerated; high doses may cause mild digestive discomfort. Caution and professional advice are recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney or liver disease, or when taking medicines that act on the nervous system. Always consult a healthcare professional if you take medication. You can complement this information with foods rich in tryptophan.
