Boswellia serrata, known as “Indian frankincense”, is one of the most widely used natural anti-inflammatories for joints. Learn what it is used for, how to take it, and its precautions.
What is boswellia serrata?
It is the resin of a tree native to India. Its interest lies in boswellic acids (including AKBA), compounds that inhibit enzymes involved in inflammation.
What is boswellia used for?
- Joint health: it helps reduce pain and stiffness and is being studied in knee osteoarthritis.
- General anti-inflammatory action.
Some knee osteoarthritis trials have shown improvements in pain and mobility after several weeks of use.
How to take boswellia and dosage
It is used as a standardised extract (often containing 60% or more boswellic acids), at 200–400 mg, 2–3 times per day. For joints it is often combined with other ingredients; you may be interested in chondroitin and foods rich in collagen.
Contraindications and side effects
It is generally well tolerated, though it can occasionally cause mild digestive discomfort. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and seek advice if you take anticoagulants or other medication. Always consult a healthcare professional.
