Avatar de David García David García 2 min de lectura

Berberine has become popular for its effects on blood sugar and metabolism. Learn what it is used for, how to take it, and its contraindications.

What is berberine and what is it used for?

Berberine is a plant-derived compound (found in plants such as barberry). It activates an enzyme called AMPK, which is central to glucose and fat metabolism, so it is being studied as support for insulin resistance.

Berberine benefits

  • Glucose management: it may help improve insulin sensitivity and blood-sugar levels.
  • Lipid profile: improvements in total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides have been observed.
  • It is being researched in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and metabolic syndrome.

How to take berberine and dosage

A common protocol is 500 mg, 2 or 3 times daily with meals (up to around 1,500 mg/day), split to maintain steadier levels and improve digestive tolerance. For cardiovascular health, coenzyme Q10 and omega-3 may also be of interest.

Contraindications and side effects

It may cause digestive discomfort (diarrhoea, constipation or gas). It should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It interacts with metformin, cholesterol medication and other medicines, so it is essential to consult a healthcare professional before starting, especially if you take medication.
