Vitamin D3 and K2: Benefits, Dosage and Safety

Avatar de David García David García 2 min de lectura

Vitamin D3 and K2 have become popular because they work together for bones and the heart. Learn what they do, why they are often taken together, and in what dose.

What are vitamin D3 and K2 used for?

Vitamin D3 supports intestinal calcium absorption and helps maintain bones, teeth, muscles and the immune system. Vitamin K2 helps direct that calcium into bone rather than allowing it to deposit in arteries.

Why take them together?

The idea behind their synergy is simple: “vitamin D puts calcium into the blood and K2 tells it where to go”. Without enough K2, calcium that D3 helps absorb could build up in unwanted places, such as arteries. That is why many formulas combine both.

Dosage and how to take them

A common approach is 50–100 mcg of K2 (MK-7) for every 1,000 IU of vitamin D3. As fat-soluble vitamins, they are absorbed better with a meal containing fat. Adjust D3 according to your levels, ideally after a blood test. For bone health, adequate dietary magnesium is also essential.

Precautions

Vitamin K2 may interfere with vitamin K antagonist anticoagulants (such as acenocoumarol or warfarin), so do not take it without medical supervision in that case. Consult a healthcare professional before supplementing, especially if you take medication. Also look after your iron intake.
